THE WORK BEGINS
After two and a half years of planning, work has finally begun on Siddal Moor’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project.  The contractors, Carillion, moved onto the site on Monday 18th January and started the two year, £14 million process of demolition, new building and refurbishment.

Maintaining standards at Siddal Moor
Building Schools for the Future
After several weeks of preparatory work, installing temporary buildings, redirecting service pipes and cables and laying new car parks, the work on the new Siddal Moor Sports College is in full swing, with the old administration block demolished and the foundations being laid for the new three storey block and the drama studio.

A key consideration in the building process is the maintenance of high standards of teaching and learning, with minimum impact on the educational experience of the school's students.  This is being achieved through a phasing process that requires only one temporary classroom and keeps specialist rooms in operation until new ones are ready.  In addition, arrangements with the main contractors, Carillon, ensure that the noisiest operations take place, as far as possible, in holiday times or away from where teaching is taking place.  During the Easter holiday, the fence at the back of school was moved back to create more space for students at break and lunch times.

Another vital factor is the security and safety of students and of the site.  Arrangements to ensure this are constantly under review and a range of measures has been put in place.  Key Stage 3 students have had Health and Safety teaching from the Carillion team, as part of the contractors' educational programme.
The building work has started - the first build is the lift shaft ....
